The medical benefits of CBD usage has been gaining popularity recently and the makers of various CBD products are promising the safety of the products. CBD has been effective in treating some medical illnesses in children as well, which makes it a product for all.
What is CBD?
CBD is a cannabidiol, which can be obtained from hemp plant as well as marijuana plant, both of which belong to the Cannabis sativa family. Hemp derived CBD has minimal content of THC which is an intoxicating compound while marijuana derived CBD has high concentration of THC. Only hemp derived CBD enjoys a legal status in the US and it is the one used as medication for children.
CBD products can come in different forms like CBD oils, CBD gummies etc and the widely available one is the CBD oil.
CBD in Treating Children’s Ailments
Food and Drug administration has approved the use of CBD for treating epilepsy in children. Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome are two among the rarest forms of epilepsy. The symptoms of these forms of epilepsy are seizures, which are sometimes tough to be controlled.
The common CBD medication use to treat epilepsy is Epidolex and it can be obtained with a doctor’s prescription. The medication was found to be successful in reducing the frequency of seizures in epileptic children.
Several studies have suggested that the use of CBD oil helps to cure the symptoms of autism. Rage attacks, seizures and restlessness are the usual symptoms of autism and the studies conducted on several autistic patients could prove that the CBD oil usage could bring these symptoms under control.
Studies are going on to find out the right dosage of CBD to treat the symptoms of autism in children between the age of 5 and 18.
Use of CBD oil by adults, to reduce anxiety has found success but the potential benefits of CBD usage to treat anxiety in children lack sufficient proof. A recent study of a 10 -year old girl with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has found that it has helped in reducing her symptoms of anxiety and insomnia.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
There is not much research conducted to discover the potential of CBD in treating ADHD and much evidence on its effectiveness in ADHD treatment is also not available. Some parents have reported that CBD oil has helped in reducing symptoms in their children while some have reported that there is no effect produced at all.
